Learn to decorate your Easter eggs to look like Totoro from My Neighbor Totoro! If you’re a fan of Studio Ghibli movies, you absolutely need to incorporate that into your Easter celebrations! Totoro is the perfect character to start with because of its already egg-like shape.

Ingredients for Totoro Easter Eggs

  • hard boiled eggs – make sure you hard boil the eggs first, before decorating!
  • black food coloring – a couple drops of black food coloring will create Totoro’s grey fur.
  • black edible ink pen – these are so handy to have in your egg decorating supplies! You can easily add extra designs and patterns on eggs.
  • painter’s tape – this is the perfect tape to use on eggs because it sticks well and blocks out the water, but doesn’t remove the egg shell when being peeled off!
  • water
  • vinegar – adding vinegar to the water when dyeing eggs helps the color stick to the eggshell!

How to Make Totoro Easter Eggs

Step 1: Tape the eggs.

An oval of green painter's tape is being placed onto the side of an egg.
Two small green circles of tape have been stuck onto the Totoro egg shell.

Place an oval of painter’s tape onto the “belly” of each hard boiled egg. Then place two small circles of tape onto the eggs as eyes. You can use a hole punch to easily cut these out of the painter’s tape!

Step 2: Dye the eggs.

Vinegar is being poured into a glass of water.
Black food coloring is being added to a glass of water.
A spoon is stirring a glass containing water, vinegar and black food coloring.

Combine the water and vinegar in a glass. Add 1-2 drops of black food coloring and mix well.

An egg is being scooped out of the glass containing the egg dye. It has been dyed grey.
The egg has been dyed grey and the tape has been peeled off Totoro's tummy.
The tape has been peeled off Totoro's eyes, revealing 2 white circles.

Place the eggs into the glass one egg at a time. Allow the eggs to sit in the dye for a couple minutes, until they are a medium grey color. Place them on a tray (or the egg carton they came in) to dry, then gently peel off the painter’s tape.

Step 3: Add the finishing touches.

Pupils are being drawn onto Totoro's eyes with a black marker.
A Totoro egg is in an egg cup. Half of its whiskers have been added. Its tummy is still bare.
Totoro's fur has been drawn onto the egg.

Use the black edible ink pen to draw Totoro’s pupils, nose, whiskers and fluffy tummy directly onto the eggshells. Enjoy!
