How to Make Homemade Butter

Homemade butter is much easier to make than you’d expect and only requires 2 ingredients!

This butter recipe can be used for anything you would use butter in – sautéing, buttercream, toast – anything! Once I was making my Carrot Cake Cupcakes and ran out of butter, but I had some extra cream in the fridge, so I quickly whipped up some homemade butter to use in the buttercream and I felt so FANCY that I had even made the butter from scratch!

Butter is incredibly simple to make and can take less than 10 minutes. You simply need some cream (and maybe salt) on hand and a really solid blender. I use my nutribullet because it’s small, compact and super easy to use and clean. This post isn’t sponsored at all, but if you’re looking for a tool that will really simplify and speed up the process, I can’t recommend the nutribullet enough!

Ingredients for Homemade Butter

How to Make Homemade Butter

Step 1: Whip the cream.

Place the cream in a blender and pulse for 5-6 minutes until it splits. It will first become whipped cream and be one solid mass, but keep blending until you see the consistency shift and the milk solids separate from the liquid.

Step 2: Rinse and season the butter.

Drain the liquid into a dish – this is homemade buttermilk! You can save it in your fridge for any recipe that requires buttermilk.

Wash the milk solids (aka butter) in very cold water until all of the buttermilk has been removed. If buttermilk is still present, the butter could go rancid.

At this point, you can add salt to create salted butter or any other flavors or seasonings that you like. Mix it into the butter until well combined.

Step 3: Shape the butter.

If desired, press the butter into a mold of your choice. I used a piping bag in the photos, but it’s much easier (although less pretty) if you just use your fingers. This will prevent any air bubbles and make sure that it is packed into every crevice in the mold.

Place the mold in the freezer for 4-5 hours or overnight, until the butter is solid. Then unmold and enjoy!
