I am a huge fan of cookies-and-cream-anything. If there’s a cookies-and-cream ice cream, cake, or pancake, you best believe I’m there. In fact, I was once inspired to get a cookies-and-cream manicure. It was super fun – I’ll see if I have a photo somewhere!
Anyway, when a subscriber requested an Oreo hot chocolate recipe, I had to oblige. How could I not? It was a fantastic idea, and it reminded me of Dunkin Donuts.
This Oreo hot chocolate is extremely easy to make with just a few ingredients: milk, Oreos, chocolate, and whipped cream. Once the Oreos melt in the hot milk, you combine it with melted chocolate, making it an extra decadent treat. So easy! Then, just top it off with whipped cream. This is one winter drink that I’ll be making for weeks!
Recipe Ingredients
This is what you’ll need for this recipe:
- Milk – From my experience of making (and drinking) many, many mugs of hot chocolate, full-cream milk always delivers the best results. I love how the full-bodied texture leaves a creamy coat on my tongue even after I’ve finished the entire mug. It’s not to say that it’s the only acceptable milk option. If you are more of an oat milk, soy milk, almond milk, or skimmed milk person, go for it!
- Oreos – We’ll need about 10 to 15 Oreos, crushed. There are also additional Oreo pieces on top of the whipped cream, so I’d say grab 2 standard packets (each packet has about 13 Oreos, last I checked).
- Chocolate – Measure 50 grams of dark or white chocolate. This is fully up to your preference. Feel free to substitute the chocolate pieces with cocoa powder if that is available to you.
- Whipped cream – It’s really easy to make fresh whipped cream at home. All you need to do is beat together whipping cream, confectioner’s sugar, and vanilla extract, and voila! Of course, the easier way is to grab a can of store-bought, ready-whipped cream.
How to Make Oreo Hot Chocolate
Once you’ve gathered your ingredients, you’re ready to make Oreo hot chocolate! Essentially, you have to make an Oreo-milk mixture, melt the chocolate, and fill the mug with milk before topping it off with whipped cream. Easy peasy!
- Place 2 cups of milk in a small pot. Add the crushed Oreos and set the pot to medium heat.
- Once the milk begins to simmer, remove it from the heat and allow it to fully cool. The milk will have significantly thickened from the cookies.
- Add the remaining 1 cup of milk and mix well. Strain the milk to catch any more big pieces of Oreos and reheat the mixture.
- Melt the dark or white chocolate and fill the bottom of the mugs with the melted chocolate. Pour Oreo milk into about ⅓ of the mug and stir with the chocolate. Then, fill the mug with more Oreo milk, leaving some space for the whipped cream.
- Spoon some freshly whipped cream on top and decorate with Oreo pieces.
- Tip: To DIY whipped cream at home, combine the whipping cream, confectioner’s sugar, and vanilla extract. Beat with an electric mixer until stiff peaks form.
- Enjoy!
What to Serve with Oreo Hot Chocolate
Oreo hot chocolate is a thick chocolate drink that’s great on its own. Nevertheless, variety is the spice of life! Try these ideas to get more fun and flavor in one drink:
- With baked goods – Enjoy with plain, glazed donuts. Or… more cookies. 😌
- With savory snacks – Balance out the sweetness with salted peanuts, pretzels, cheese crackers, or cheese sticks. While you’re at it, why not sprinkle some sea salt over the whipped cream?
- With peppermint – Place some peppermint sticks (Christmas candy canes) into the mug just before serving. Use it as a stirrer and the flavor will eventually melt into your hot chocolate.
- With alcohol – Rum will bring a hint of vanilla, whereas Cointreau tastes more like orange. Both work well with chocolate. You can also add Kahlua, which is a coffee liqueur. Bourbon and vodka, as well as any peppermint-flavored liqueur, will also work well. Just be sure you’re not adding these to the kids’ mugs!
Recipe Tips
- Like most of my hot chocolate recipes, I’ve used a pot to heat up the milk. However, a microwave also works if a stove is not accessible to you.
- To crush Oreos, place them in a ziplock bag and arm yourself with a rolling pin. Roll over the ziplock bag until they break into pieces. Alternatively, pulverize to a sand-like consistency. Both methods work, but the latter will save you more time since we want the Oreos to melt.
- Garnish your Oreo hot chocolate with one or two sprigs of mint to add a pop of color.
Can I Freeze Oreo Hot Chocolate?
Freezing hot chocolate isn’t common, but yes, it’s doable! Divide the milk into freezer-safe mugs or containers. Let them cool to room temperature. Then, wrap them in cling foil and place them in the freezer. When you are ready to serve these again, heat them up in the microwave and serve them with freshly whipped cream and more Oreo pieces on top. Enjoy!
