Red Blood Cell Rice Dumplings

Plump, delicious rice dumplings that look like red blood cells! Perfect for a spooky dessert, or to surprise a doctor friend! These homemade rice dumplings are so soft and tender and are mixed with a delicious raspberry coconut sauce.

Ingredients

  • 2/3 cup shiratama ko rice flour linked below
  • 1/3 cup + 1 tbsp water
  • red food coloring
  • ½ cup coconut cream
  • 1 ½ tbsp light brown sugar
  • ½ cup raspberries
  • red food coloring

Instructions

  • First, make the dumplings. Place the shiratamako flour into a bowl, and gradually drizzle in the water. Knead with a spoon (or your hands – much easier). The dough should form into one piece, and be firm enough for a piece of dough to be rolled into a ball, and retain its form when placed down. Depending on the humidity of your house, you may need to add a bit more flour or water, but do so very gradually.
  • Dye the dough red with some food coloring.
  • Roll the dough into little balls, then flatten them with your finger to create red blood cell shapes!
  • Place the dumplings in a pot of boiling water. Once they have risen to the surface, boil for 1 minute, then place in a bowl of ice water. Then place them on a plate lined with saran wrap while you make the syrup.
  • Place the coconut milk, brown sugar and raspberries into a pan and bring to a boil. Add some red food coloring to make it look like blood. Pour this through a cheesecloth to remove the raspberry seeds.
  • Spoon the red blood cells into a bowl, then pour the blood syrup on top. Enjoy!
