Mini Doughnut Sprinkles
In celebration of International Doughnut Day on June 6, I’ve made these adorable little mini doughnuts! These can be used as cupcake or cake decorations, or placed on top of regular sized doughnuts for a “doughnut inception”. Or, if you’re feeling especially cute, place the mini doughnuts in a mini bowl and pour in some milk for a mini cereal! These do look quite fiddly, but if you just plop yourself down and decorate these while watching your favourite movie or television show, it could turn into a really fun and creative process. I actually got EXTRA fiddly and used tweezers to specifically place sprinkles on them. You obviously don’t have to be as finicky about it as I was, but I loved how they turned out looking like little dollhouse doughnuts.
Mini Doughnut Sprinkles
Ingredients
- about 90 cheerios
- 1 cup confectioner’s sugar
- 1-2 tbsp milk
- ¾ tsp vanilla extract
- food colouring
- sprinkles
- 2 styrofoam blocks 4×8 inches
- plastic wrap
- toothpicks
Instructions
- Cover the Styrofoam block in plastic wrap. Stick the toothpicks into the block, leaving about ½ inch sticking out. Space them far enough apart so that you can easily slide the cheerios on and off the sticks. Then slide all of the cheerios onto the sticks.
- Make the glaze: Mix the confectioner’s sugar, 1 tablespoon of milk and vanilla extract together to form a thick glaze. If the glaze is still very chunky and too thick, add the additional 1 tablespoon of milk. Divide the glaze into smaller bowls, and dye it your desired colours.
- With a tiny spoon, drizzle a small amount of the glaze onto the top of a cheerio. Decorate each cheerio with sprinkles immediately after topping with the glaze, so that the sprinkles will stick to the glaze before it sets.
- Once you’ve glazed and decorated all of the cheerios, gently take them off the toothpicks in a gentle twisting motion. Let them sit for about 30 minutes for the glaze to set even more.
