Sorting Hat Cake | 組み分け帽子のケーキ

Ingredients

Cake batter:
1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
2 cups sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
6 eggs, room temperature
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
1 ½ cups buttermilk
red, green, blue and yellow food colouring

Sorting Hat:
¼ cup unsalted butter
5 cups mini marshmallows
½ tsp vanilla extract
6 cups rice krispies cereal
cooking spray

2 cups chocolate frosting

Buttercream:
2 cups unsalted butter, room temperature
1 tsp vanilla extract
5 cups confectioner’s sugar

Directions

Bake the cakes:
Beat the butter and sugar with an electric mixer until pale and fluffy. Add the vanilla extract and eggs one at a time, beating with each addition. In a separate bowl, combine the flour, baking soda and salt. Add this to the butter mixture in 2 additions, alternating with the buttermilk. Divide the batter between 4 bowls and dye it red, green, blue and yellow. Pour the batter into 4 greased and floured 9 inch-round cake pans. Bake at 350F for 15-20 minutes, or until a skewer inserted into the center comes out clean. Cool completely.

Make the Sorting Hat:
Melt the butter in a large pot over medium heat. Add the marshmallows and mix until melted. Turn off the heat and add the vanilla, stirring to combine. Add the rice krispies and mix until it is well coated in the marshmallow mixture. Spray a baking sheet with cooking spray and pour the mixture on top. Allow it to cool until it can easily be handled, then shape it into the Sorting Hat, creating a cone for the main section, a disk for the brim and eyes and a mouth. Cool completely.

Make the buttercream:
Beat the butter with an electric mixer until pale and fluffy. Add the vanilla extract and mix well. Add the confectioner’s sugar one cup at a time, then beat for 3-5 minutes until fluffy.

To assemble:
Slice each cake into quarters and place one quarter of each colour on your desired serving dish, creating a circle. Spread some buttercream on top and repeat to create 3 more layers, making sure to place the same colours on top of each other. Coat the cake in a generous layer of buttercream.
Place the Sorting Hat on a mug, or any tall, narrow surface. Coat the hat in a layer of chocolate frosting, then gently place on top of the cake. Place the remaining frosting into a piping bag fitted with a star-shaped piping tip and pipe a cute design around the base of the cake.
Slice the cake to reveal which house you’re in!
